Everybody who said that each story is unrelated nintendo already announced a timeline , and this timeline is in fact a timeline that splits into 2 universes. Here is a video that tells about it.
The only difference is nintendo actually state there was a timeline , and it is split into two universes. Gametrailers got that wrong.
