Why would people use those other devices. I cut my cable box because the PS3 and 360 provide the on demand apps I need. Consuming TV shows and movies on the PC/Laptop/Tablet is for bit size on the road scenerio. Netflix and similar isnt needed if you have the channels for the programs you follow subscribed for on your cable box, and depending on how old/ghetto the box is, you are more than likely going to have the capability of recording said shows to your cable box.
elsewhere, ask a brit what they watch tv shows on more.. actual tv programming or apps on their games console.
Annnd... last but not least.. what do you think the IR blaster on the xbox one controls?, go on, i'll let you guess.

People love to say that Pay TV (Cable, Sat) is dead.. Its estimated that there are 115 million TV households in the USA. Over 90 million of othem have Cable or Sat.. Average household has 2.5 people.. 225 MILLION people watch Cable or Sat TV... USA has 313 million people.. so 72% of ALL Americans have Cable or Sat TV... the declines are nominal for real cord cutters. It will be a good decade before the "death" of Cable or Sat is anything of REAL substance.
The Xbox One's ability to still use the PREVAILING TV WATCHING method while also expanding into newer areas is a smart move.. anyone who thinks differently isn't paying attention to what the real data shows.. Cord cutters .. are a minority.

Yeah thats all good but theres only 2 problems.
1) Cable TV providers are not going to give MS a dime for allowing their TV to pass through XB1.
2) To the vast majority of people who watch proper TV, XB1 only offers a tiny convenience which no-one will care if they dont have, and its not a big influencing factor when people decide which console to buy.
You explained brilliantly how TV is still alive, but people can still watch it even if they buy another console.
