Oh, so you didn't read the actual article. It equates anime fans with the growing American otaku market right away.

Oh, when I see "American Otaku" I don't read it by its actual definition (meant as an insult of the subculture), but the romanticized version used in the West. Like a lot of things brought over, it loses its true meaning. In the States, it's used synonymously with fans of anime and Japanese games.
