Yes, I think it's possible. Even if there is a 3-million gap between GameCube and Wii U, IF you look at game sales, you will see that the two selling best games of GameCube, released before the end of 2003 although major Nintendo games for Wii U will release in 2014 but also in 2015 (probably next Zelda, next Smash and maybe another Mario).
Moreover Smash Bros. Mellee released in the beginnning of the GameCube which sold many Cubes. It's not released yet for Wii U.
I'm confident. Wii U will rise.
