If the Wii U had a "Wii Sports"-like title packed in with it, instead of charging full price for the likes of glorified shovelware like Nintendo Land, then you can bet it would have flown off shelves at $300-$350. Price alone had nothing to do with it... you'll notice those same casuals had no problem dropping an additional $100 on the likes of Wii Fit and Rock Band / Guitar Hero. Just something about plastic peripherals that they can't get enough of... see Skylanders these days. And I hate to break it to you, but like it or not, "casuals" also helped make the PS4 as scarce as it was during the holidays, because they run out and buy whatever the "hot" item is during the holidays, and the PS4 being $399 didn't stop them from buying it. Core gamers alone didn't make the PS4 sell out. |
I don't think we're talking about the same "casuals". They wouldn't pay $400 for a games console in a million years. Also why would I have a problem with anyone making the PS4 scarce? I had mine pre ordered last February the day they opened so shortages had no impact on me whatsoever.
PS4 is just where most of the 360/PS3 core gamers have migrated to at the moment. A system needs to be around $200 to have any possible chance of selling to the "casuals" who leapt on board the Wii in their droves. The same price point where they were encouraged onto the PS1 for Dance Dance Revolution etc and PS2 for Singstar and Buzz etc. Wii just happened to pretty much launch from that price day 1 meaning that kind of gamer was much more intrigued day 1, though Wii Sports and the Wii Remote also massively helped.
