Gaming now is so diverse compared to the past. The variety of last gen was really nice and I see that continuing. Just because FPS games are the most popular doesn't mean other genres will go away. Most gamers I know play multiple genres.
The big thing here, I think, is that FPS has progressed so much. It encompasses different types of content, from Portal to Bioshock to CoD to Fallout, and it's gotten SO much better in the short number of years since it started getting popular. Last gen compared to PS2 gen is a substantial difference.
It always puzzles me the way some people hate on FPS. It seems so childish to me.
