I don't think it'd be super successful. Look at the drop off between the console/handheld versions of Pokemon. Series is aimed at kids, and they generally prefer handhelds over consoles. Especially in Japan.

home consoles never had a main pokemon game.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Zero is right. The mainline Pokemon games have always stayed on handheld so we don't know how a console version would perform.
