Not to mention cigarrette smoke can hinder operation of all disc-reading hardware - not just the Wii.

Additionally: There are amazing things called "chemical protectants" that Nintendo can apply to the lense to prevent further buildup. I think the concept of adding non-stick film to a glass surface was invented not too long ago... in the 1950s or something like that. No wonder you haven't heard of it yet.
