I'm a networker myself so I can say whatever they are doing has probably nothing to do with server maintenance. Servers are designed to run indefinitely so it's not like they have to clear out the recycle bin every few weeks.

I'm suspecting that in that time they are using the servers for other tasks not related to the PSN.

As good a theory as any but what could they possibly be doing with them? That does not make sense
