I've had many very good friends in my childhood and adolescense, but most of them have moved away (not too far though so we see each other several times a year).
My two very best friends (they're brothers) were snagged by two different occupancies; one is currently serving in Afghanistan and the other is serving his girlfriend...
Seriously, he's not permited to decide anything in their lives and they always do what she wants, including only seeing her family and friends!
