Well Baten Kaitos has an 80% at Metacritic and Tales of Symphonia has a pretty healthy 86%. In comparison Famitsu, whom are notorious for high scores for RPGs gave Baten Kaitos a 31 or 79% which is lower than it's NA average and Tales of Symphonia scored a 34 or 85% which is again lower than it's NA average.
I'm not saying scores are the tell all, but you're saying Breath of Fire is a "AAA" status series based on what? Sales? It doesn't have them. Critical acclaim? It doesn't have it? Public perception? Completely overshadowed by all major Squaresoft releases in the same era.
Reviewers hand out pretty good scores to RPGs generally so for Breath of Fire to recieve comparitively lower scores than other RPGs of the same era each time they release one should show this series is probably not of the same quality as the heavy hitters. Famitsu themselves gave the PSP version of Breath of Fire III a 29 only which is roughly a 74%, so even in Japan where these games score well, it still isn't hitting home. Just try to understand, considering you haven't even played the series yet that maybe it isn't that big a deal.
