With a 3% tax increase, the PS4 is like $12 more expensive now. The lack of games, let alone Japanese games is a more likely culprit.
With the previous generation, there was backwards compatibility to fill out the game shortage. Halo 2 was the number 1 game on Xbox Live on 360 for quite a while after launch and PS3 offered Blu-ray playback as a distraction
With the generation before that, there was also backwards compatibility or people could at least use their fancy new console for DVD playback.
With this generation, there isn't much beyond games to do that consumers cannot also do on 50 other devices they already own.
