It's not at all surprising that the first icon of the modern video game is still the most popular. He's only had, what, 27 years to gain his popularity? Master Chief doesn't even have a quarter of that behind him yet, and Sony doesn't even have a consistent iconic mascot to speak of.
Quite frankly, I'd be thoroughly amazed if Mario were to slip into obscurity, especially in a generation where the cards keep getting dealt in Nintendo's favor...
