Ok, the PS3 has out performed one of the worst console launches in history; would you like a trophy?
If you want to see something interesting, make a graph of every console and handhelds first year on the market ... you'll notice that most of the consoles that are not the market leader clump together and the market leader (usually) ends up taking a very early lead.
