This is grim. Even the 3DO had a steadier stream of releases for its first couple of years. Even comparing it to the Dreamcast is an insult to the Dreamcast. There was a barrage of quality Dreamcast games for the two years it was on the market.
I can only see three possible outcomes:
1. Massive price cut that sparks consumer and developer interest (since this didn't work with the GameCube, even at $99, I don't see it working here as the Wii U has far fewer games than the GC).
2. The system is discontinued and Nintendo regroups and releases a successor in 2015.
3. The system is discontinued and Nintendo goes multiplatform on home consoles.
