Well, doing it now would mobilize two 800 people team at once, and some user on the forum had some theory about FFXVI being developped right now (with XII's director).
But in this day and age, there are multiple ways to keep the interest of people in a game or a series. DLCs every three months, Definitive/GOTY edition after a year, spin offs, etc.
But going back on the user who had a few proofs Hiroyuki Ito was directing a Final Fantasy right now, it's pretty clear that Tetsuya Nomura won't be FFXV-2 director, as KH3 is in pre-production. So there is a slight possibility that might be true. I didn't like FFXII artistic direction tough.
