2001: 50k

In any case, the chart should illustrate the points I was making to Soundwave in the other thread. Basically, there's nothing particulary worrisome with hardware sales for home consoles in Japan. Handhelds are another matter, but it can be argued most of the problems facing the 3DS and Vita are entirely due to their parent companies, but that's a subject for another thread and another day.

Thanks for the post and the chart.  Very interesting.

Thing is, we're already seeing a generation starting off at lower levels than we were getting at the end of a generation.  We've had the WiiU on the market for a year and a bit now, and has gained no traction.  Last generation systems are dropping off like flies - Wii is completely gone; PS3 is clinging on to relevance.

While there is still time for PS4 to see PS2 2000 -> 2001 -> 2002 esque growth (after all, it has just released on the market), these numbers really aren't encouraging.  PS2 didn't have much for its launch either and was sold on the promise of "this stuff is coming" - much like I'm sure PS4 in Japan will be selling on "Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts/Metal Gear is coming".  Except people aren't biting this time.

I'm expecting that we will see growth over the next few years, but nothing reaching any kind of heights we've seen before.
