the only impressive part is the diffusive reflections tbh, texture and geometrical detail is average.

The lighting and v-sync'd 60fps are pretty impressive to me.

That's good for you, but having higher complexity lighting and framerates is a direct result of the lower geometrical detail.

Doesn't seem to be any visual detriment to me; there's no jarring polygon edges, models do not appear blocky.

Last build I saw (Feb 2014) had no AA so the edges were indeed jarring, the models are nicely detailed but lack of AA does show up creeping lines here and there (depending on curvature and straight line edges), it will look fantastic played on the wiiu gamepad im sure, but the gif in the OP does nothing to put across the detrimental issues of the title on a larger screen.

Mario titles (especially the kart games) have historically been low poly, relying on the art direction to hide that, and it does it quite well, but as a developer myself art direction is not the same as graphical effect, for me the diffusive reflection in the puddles is the most impressive part of the title, geometrical detailing and textures are lacking, and the AA treatment is near non existant, i'll no doubt pick it up, and the future zelda for my WiiU, but from a standpoint of someone who deals with these technologies day in day out, the only leap over previous generation stuff is what i outlined.
