The gyroscope feature in the gamepad in Mario Kart 8 lets you steer without the need on another controller or accessory.. unless you were one of many who played Maro Kart Wii and couldn't get the motion controls to work in your favor (which I'll never get since I was able to efficiently utilize the motion controls of Mario Kart Wii, Punch Out Wii, and ESPECIALLY Skyward Sword despite the hatred users here spewed upon such controls) in which case, I can clearly why you and those who would back you would brush off something you wouldn't be able to grasp if you couldn't do such on a predecessing entry.

But you don't even need the gamepad for that. You can just use a Wii remote to do the exact same thing.
