As originally invisioned, the founding fathers wanted a nation free of standing armies.  After the revolutionary war, one of the first acts of congress was to disband the Continental army, for fear that it might be used as a tool of opression.

Basically the idea was, everyone would be able to own a gun, everyone would be able to protect themselves, and therefore it would be impossible for government to use the army in a way that was contrary to the views of the people, since people just wouldn't answer the draft, and if anything would oppose against the draft and the actions of an oppressive government.

 

The US army mostly just exists because the US got it's ass kicked really badly by some native americans.

You Americans should try that vision again (ignoring the native American bit), the world would be grateful. You can't police the world. The founding fathers probably wouldn't like what America has become either.
