I'm absolutely fine with bad games being made. I think it's awesome. It means that chances are being taken, that new things are being pushed forward. That is so much better than an environment where only proven money-makers are given the green-light by bean-counters. People with talent now at least have a chance to shine without having to go through the system first, without having to be lucky enough to work with a big studio that will maybe, just maybe, given them the chance to show their creativity. The cream will rise. What I hope will happen is that the most successful of the small developers will become the new "middle". The problem previously was that games in the middle tier of quality were being developed by large, wasteful studios and were being released with a $60 price tag. That's kind of ludicious. I want to see smaller developers release non-bloated software in the sub-$30 region. I think that would be a good alternative to what publishers like EA and Activision are doing. The term "indie", however, needs to die. |
I kind of like that idea of the new "middle."
And I really hope low-budget, high-concept games continue to thrive, on PC and on Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo platforms.
