Should I just point something out? That's the first area, and considering where it takes place, it makes sense to look that way. Introductory levels in many games are often very straight-forward.

Yes but this doesn't change after the 1st area. The whole game is basically the same kind of linear corridors.

I did say "basically".
Chapter 11 has this open area, but I think it's fair to say most of the areas are corridors with little exploration, and few points with dead ends where you have to backtrack.
I know people who thought it was excellent, and some who thought it sucks. Personally FF13 is OK as a game I can play, but as a FF it's dissapointing to say the least.
