Darc Requiem said: MikeB your post describes precisely why I think the PS3 will never get out of its third place hole. Even with a serious software drought the N64 was able to sell extremely well on hype alone. Nintendo's attitude towards third parties and format choice caused them to not have the software variety necessary to pull ahead of the Sony Playstation. The PS2, like the N64, sold on hype alone initially. For the first 12 months the PS2 had little to offer when it came to software but it rode the hype machine until the Gamecube and X-box launch. By that time, the PS2 did have necessary software to maintain its momentum. Which it still has today for the most part. The PS3, like the N64 and PS2 before it, had a great deal of hype behind it. Unlike those two consoles, the PS3 hasn't sold well out of the gate. The wouldn't matter if the PS3 launched first but it didn't launch first. So Sony doesn't have the margin of error that they did with the PS2. In Japan the PS2 had sold 3 times as many consoles by this time in its lifetime.
Third place hole ....if we consider toghether Japan and NA (the two markets where it actually competes ) it would outsell the X360 by a fair amount .Havent you even considered this ?
