Microsoft: PC Gamers can expect “more focus” from us
During this year’s GDC, Xbox boss Phil Spencer claimed that Microsoft will start focusing – yet again – on PC gaming. As Phil Spencer said, PC gamers can expect more focus from Microsoft in the PC gaming space. And while the company has made such statements in the past, we have to admit that DX12 is a game changer. So yeah, things may turn good this time around… or not? Continue reading
Unreal Engine 4 – New Videos Show Off Dynamic Global Illumination
God bless the community. Unreal Engine’s forum member ‘vblanco’ has showcased dynamic global illumination in Unreal Engine 4. According to vblanco, game developers can take advantage of GI via Light Propagation Volumes (the same GI system that CRYENGINE uses) and you can enable it by following his guide. Kudos to NeoGAF for spotting it. Enjoy the videos showing off dynamic global illumination in Unreal Engine 4! Continue reading
Narrative Legos: Ken Levine's new narrative design philosophy
CommentIn a presentation at GDC, “Narrative Legos with Ken Levine”, the System Shock 2 and BioShock Infinite creator discussed how designers can explore narratives that are non-linear, replayable and player-driven.
He was riffing, a little bit, exploring what developers - including himself - can do when they don’t limit players with artificial boundaries. He wasn’t announcing a new game, but rather detailing how he would like to approach game development in regards to the story.
Dota 2 treasure chests no longer hold duplicate items
Comments1Don’t you hate it when you’ve spent weeks tracking down a treasure chest, cursing the drunken pirate who inaccurately scrawled an ‘x’ on your laptop screen when you showed him a Google Gaps view of the area, only to find it contains a Tigger mug - the exact same Tigger mug you already owned!
Valve hate that, too. That’s why they’re changed the chests in Dota 2 to stop them giving duplicate rewards. Plus, there are lovely bonuses thrown into the mix.
Battlefield 4: Naval Strike trailer shows ye olde cannon smiting a whirly bird
CommentWe’re just days away from the release of Battlefield 4’s next DLC expansion: Naval Strike. DICE are waving in the new by bringing up the old, the latest trailer shows how a 16th century cannon is completely capable of taking out a 21st century helicopter.
It all looks like blisteringly good fun.
Protocol gives you an uzi, a motorbike, and a wanted rating
Comments1Neon blur, motorbikes, and guns: this game throbs with cool. Protocol sits you in the saddle of a motorbike, racing down a motorway in a futuristic world all watched over by an authoritarian police force. They want you dead and they’ll shoot at you and smash you with their vehicles until they get their way.
It’s free, too.
Strap on your grav boots and run freely around Hover: Revolt of Gamers’ city
Comments1Jet Set Radio Future and Mirror’s Edge have been at the hanky panky. The child’s not born yet but we’ve been sent a copy of the four month scan and, unlike most in-uterine baby videos I've seen, this is one to make you smile.
Hover: Revolt of Gamers is a colourful, cel shaded sports game that lets you leap and run over a futuristic city.
Arma 3 Win trailer shows how in war no one really wins
CommentSurvive/Adapt/Win, that’s Arma 3’s motto. It doesn’t roll off the tongue but then armies don’t often go in for lyricism, they prefer guns and killing people. There’ll be plenty of that in the concluding part of Bohemia’s miltary simulator’s campaign - guns and killing, not lyricism. (Though, I’m only assuming on the lyricism part, it could all end with a song or go a bit Oh, What a Lovely War.)
Bohemia have published a trailer announcing the release of Win.
