They might have been working on it for a while and they could be in advanced stages with VR but we don't really know. If the are working with VR they might be years away until they have a it up and running. If they bough Oculus Rift then that would gift them a product that is near the final thing.
Since MS has interests in gaming on PC it would benefit them and they can adapt it to work with the X1.
