Volumetric displays (what the op means) are limited by the size of the real world. For art and ads they're cool but for everything else it's just the public's obsession with star wars that makes "holodecks" a popular desire. VR and light field displays like actual holograms are a million times better.

Regardless of the tech volumetric displays occupy a volume. In order to see an image of a ten foot dinosaur, your room would need to be large enough to fit a ten foot dinosaur.

Non volumetric displays are much better for most aspects including gaming. Personally VR is the best option, but there's still plenty of alternatives if for some reason you're against wearing a headset. All of these techniques recreate the 3D lightfield within a 2D plane. These would be the equivalent of windows, while volumetric displays are fishtanks.
