VR has like three modes in my opinion.
1: 1 to 1 mapping of real life and the virtual world. This could be considered perfect VR, but as such it's really limited. Virtual tours and similar games where you physically walk around fall into this category.
2: Mimicking 1 to 1 mapping. This would be your skyrims and such. The VR experience replaces body motion with controller input. Press X to jump instead of physically jumping. Hold forward on an analogue stick instead of physically walking forward.
3: The flying chair. This is essentially the "other" category. The game is played identical to 2D games. In a third person game it gives the sensation of flying around the world as a cameraman. Racers and vehicle games work best with this because the "flying chair" can match up with the car or cockpit. Motion can be a problem though. Visually it may be identical to driving a real car, but you don't have the force feedback of acceleration.
Groups 1 and 2 show the most promise imo. Almost all first person games can fit into 2, but the slower paced ones are usually a better experience. Skyrim good, Mirror's Edge bad. Games and genres for group one don't exist yet, and personally those are the ones that show the most promise. It's not translating current games to VR, build building experiences that were impossible before. At the moment these games/demos are just using presence as a killer app, but I really hope they expand to offer deep and fun gameplay.
