Um the only thing you needed to buy was the core system, and Gold really. I mean no one bought the $200 HD DVD add-on. And Gold, from 2006-2010, was indisputably better than PSN so it was worth it.
The PS3 was super expensive, it was a joke. I like the PS3 now, but the $599, all the lies, the downgrades, the losing of exclusives, etc. etc. was a bigger slap in the face than even MS' DRM policies.
