Not true at all, when both anime's came on, Pokemon Blue/Red came out. 33mil+ bought the games, that right there tells you the anime was bigger cuz kids were getting the toys (games/ trading cards)

I do personally love how digimon season 1 was so great though, the better anime of both first seasons imo was definitely Digimon. Digimon season 2 was good as well but they started killing it afterward :-/ (anime)

I'm saying that where I live Digimon was just as big as Pokemon. I don't know how it was in the US or where you're from.
