One game on its own does not mark a mediocrity streak. With Nintendo's guiding hand there's no telling how successive games may have fared in terms of quality. It could have just been a one off, but with the takeover from Microsoft we'll never know.

I said it was the beginning of the streak; it was mediocre and so are all their games after it.
If I recall correctly a lot of their core staff left around the time of SA, that could be why.

Star Fox Assault wasn't as good as it could have been, but I wouldn't call it mediocre. Star Fox Command wasn't that great either but far from bad.
