Biology. I thought crossed my mind the other day: What if homosexuality is evolution's way of keeping population numbers in check? I know, it's probably nonsense but I found the thought amusing.
As for the hating part, moral rules coming from different sources (religions) say homosexuality is bad and people have been raised according to those rules, so... Also, people have a tendency to fear everything different.
