I'm not coming at this from a "wouldn't it be cool" angle, but rather from the standpoint of watching too many franchises get neglected in favor of questionable spinoffs. You make spinoffs when a game sells so amazingly well that you can print money just featuring its characters. The Metroid franchise does not sell well, sadly enough. I don't think creating another game in its universe will do anything except fragment the existing audience.

While I understand your point, I still think would be great anyway. Mario Kart is a example that a spin-off can be great. And no, I don't think a Metroid spin-off would have MK sales level.
