No one has ever called Lloyd Irving emo. I think you ar confusing him with Emil Castagnier, a character  that I consider the worse protagonist in JRPG history. Emil was the lead character of Tales of Symphonia: DotNW. I have had heard the other complaints used about the original ToS though. I've also heard the game called formulaic before.

The emo lead comment was the strecth, but I didn't consider Tidus to be emo at all either.
