I thought the gameplay was quite strong.
There were a few critiques I had though.
Soundtrack: Metroid should have a soundtrack that is more alien, more foreign, and a little more upbeat. Something like super metroid or prime.
Ambience: Metroid needs to have this isolationist feel. All the good metroid games make you feel almost claustrophobic and alone. I feel like the spaceship design was done due to a lack of power on the wii...so that they were able to re-use textures. I honestly believe that a good metroid should be something hand-drawn. Something really unique to each area that doesn't feel so sterile.
Exploration: There wasn't nearly enough, but the puzzles were rather well done. However, I prefer the metroids where you need to scan every room to find the secrets, rather than just stumble upon them.
Unlocking: I didn't like the unlocking system, because I would get to areas that I should have been able to access until ok, now I'm allowed to use the super bomb. I want to FIND the super bomb, not have it handed to me. I dunno, it sounds like the same thing, but it just felt wrong.
Graphics: Going the realistic route I felt really hurt this game. That gif of what's his name black guy and his helmet literally made me hate him.

In summation, I think metroid should be redone, in a hand-drawn style, similar to that gif of samus and little mac that someone has in their sig. I think it should all be handrawn, darker, and scarier. Metroid should feel more like the end of the movie Alien. Death around every corner, bad bitch big guns, but very much fragile....and most importantly, alone.
