Yeah, but the difference is that it was a new generation and Sony overestimated brand loyalty. A monopoly mid-generation is a different matter, developers will stay where the marketshare is the highest, with the monopoly holder. If somebody else entered the market with a new console all the monopoly holder would have to do to compete is cut their price down to the bare minimum for profitability. Chances are that a new competitor wouldn't enter the market mid-gen for that very reason, we'd have to wait for a new generation for new competition to enter the market.

A monoply in itslef is not bad. In your hypothetical situation of the market leader going sour mid way through the gen, what are they doing that's bad for gamers?
