I think you're mistaken there. Sony did it just last gen, they pretty much had a monopoly with the PS2 so they overcharged for the PS3. Yes, if Sony or Microsoft were to get a monopoly this gen and started overcharging, another tech company could swoop in with a new gameconsole, but could they steal the industry that quickly with all of the developer support and marketshare that the monoply holder had? Probably not, as the monopoly holder could cut their price back down to the bare minimum they need to be profitable and keep developer support on their side due to the larger marketshare.

You're proving my point. Sony overcharged for the PS3, and look what happened. People didn't pay! The "monopoly" they had with the PS2 didn't mean squat.
