In the N64 days, Nintendo and especially Rareware produced enough high quality AAA games to justify buying the system for these games alone. Now with Rareware gone, Nintendos own games just aren't enough. They sold their best developer and as a result, don't have enough AAA games, especially for older customers.
They need to make the tablet controller smaller, lighter and longer-lasting or completely drop it and they need 3rd party support. To ensure 3rd party support, they should take some money from the bank to buy developers and shares of companies like Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda and Square Enix.
3rd party developers just want to make money like any other company. Nintendo does not provide a platform for them to make money and this the only reason for them to stay away from Wii-U.
