Why not take into account that Wii U sales are currently higher in Japan than PS4 sales, outside of launch week? That's a big part of what this is saying.

Home consoles are not super sucessful in Japan, and looking at how other platforms did, i just dont see how this is a flop.

dont interpret it as me saying the Wii U isnt doing well there. In relative terms, maybe they are both doing well. 3DS seems to be the only platform that has done exceptionally well.
