The tech won't be done after a poor implementation. It might take a break again, just as 3D has been coming and going the last 70 years. This iteration will be a huge step up from the last one and will actually be affordable to the masses. It will definitely stick around with pc this time as 3D has since the 90's.
Sure you can simulate the same field of view by sitting 1.2ft away from a 34" screen. For living room comfort that scales up to a 250" screen needed at 9ft viewing distance. It's more practical to wear the glasses on the couch. And head tracking will never work right with a fixed screen, same as stereoscopic 3D stuck on a fixed screen. You can do some positional headtracking with stereoscopic 3D, but you really need to keep your head near the center of the screen for best results.
It's still early for VR. Resolution and frame rate are still low. Any noticeable lag in head tracking is potential for motion sickness. But we didn't wait to appreciate 3D gaming before they were as comfortable to watch as their 2D counterparts.
