I doubt they will try to push this into mainstream, just putting out a (fairly expensive) Rift competitor with some PS4 support especially in 1st/2nd party games shouldn't be a big commitment money wise. Having a foot in the VR market might prove very vital once there is mainstream hardware that can actually provide high fidelity graphics at the needed resolution/fps for VR. |
That's the thing though; if they want a shot at being relevant once it hits mainstream, they need to pioneer and be at the forefront and that entails a rather big risk somewhere down the line. I'm all for Sony helping push tech and they are among the most important proponents of format development and implementation but I'm afraid this could bite them in the rear through adding massive R&D costs and then ending up as a side-line aspect of their total business schedule that misses the mainstream angle when and if it ever hits that way, making it near impossible to recoup the losses.
I think their best bet is to keep it subdermal for now and then offer their tech and services to other companies with bigger assembly and production capacity and a less perilous current financial situation, as soon as the opportunity strikes.
Samsung made their fortune by providing other companies with tech and parts, synergy business divides the risk and opens possible venues for reciprocal trade and tech advantages, something they sorely need now more than ever; they are moving even farther away from being self-sufficient by selling off or downsizing entire divisions.
