They got careless and thought that they could maintain their lead, but Sony made smart decisions and they caught up. Microsoft is in the same position Sony was back at the beginning of the 7th generation, priced higher, more difficult to develop games for, and behind in sales, but there's one crucial difference in Microsoft's favor, they have far more money, and they can use that money for extensive marketing, to afford to take a loss on each console sold in order to match or undercut the PS4's price, to found new 1st party studios with top tier talent, to buy 3rd party exclusivity rights, to offer the Xbox One at a subsidized price with cable/satellite providers (playing off the Xbox On'es tv features), etc. The question is, will they use that money to do those things, or will they be content with staying in 2nd place while keeping the Xbox division profitable? |
I think there will be a mandate at MS, that this time Xbox must be profitable if its to stay, this is there 3rd gen it should no longer be about marketshare, it should be a very profitable arm of the company by now.
