People have chosen what to believe for the entire history of mankind. I think historical records rather attests to that. For example, there was a popular belief amongst the wealthy in the 1800s that women were frail by nature and meant to spend their lives bedridden. This had absolutely no basis in reality, but "facts" were invented to support it, and it became almost a fetish. The working class never believed such nonsense, but you would be hard-pressed to convince a well-to-do gentleman of the era that it wasn't true.
On a more personal level, of course you can choose what to believe. It becomes harder to change certain core beliefs you hold as you get older, but it can most certainly be done.
