The Wii.
It introduced a gimmick that made the industry try and capitalize on something that had no long term value. So instead of making "gamer's games", they made "grandma's games". You can hate on me all you want about either companies trying to make money or about how I shouldn't feel "entitled" to how games are made, but video games have their market and Carnival Games ain't in it.
And it's the one console where people didn't "buy it for the games". You can list all the Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, etc. but those same types of games sold nary identically on the N64 and GCN and those consoles sold 30M or less. So why is the Wii at 100M? Waggle and $20 shovelware that caught your mom's eye. It set the industry back, not forward. You can say that "it helped bring non-gamers into video games" but where are those people now? Not playing home consoles anymore but the 7th gen had enough influence for MS to pack in a Kinect to try and reach that audience....and look how that's turning out.
Every other console in which people "didn't buy it for the games"...guess what? It got discontinued. The same may happen with the WiiU as I feel that that system is indicative of the "true" success the Wii would have if it wasn't for "blue ocean" consumers.
And no, Nintendo did not rape my mom and shit in my breakfast.
