You can't use the gamecube controller for classic games in msot cases so you do need the classic controller...

Please name a single Virtual Console game that doesn't work 100% on the Gamecube controller. Last time I checked they didn't exist.

I hate to support a ckmlb rant, BUT...

There are a lot of games that work with the Gamecube controller, but you wouldn't want to actually play on the Gamecube controller. The controls often map poorly to the button configuration, and you can't customize them. Plus, who wants to actually use the microscopic D-Pad on the Gamecube controller? Diehard SNES fan here, and I can tell you you'll be much happier with a classic controller.

I don't see how this is a negative for the console though. The PS2 required you to buy PS1 memory cards to save PS1 games. So you have to buy a Gamecube controller if you want to play Gamecube games, or a classic controller if you want to play SNES games. Would you rather the Wii had kept the Gamecube controller to retain backwards compatibility and foregone innovation? Would you rather that Nintendo didn't offer the Virtual Console service, or that they didn't offer the classic controller for those who want a more authentic classic gaming experience? Sounds to me like the complaint is that the Wii has too much to offer.
