I have mixed feelings toward the news. I love the Last Of Us, and I want more people to know how great this game is. But I'm skeptical with choice of the company (Ghost House/Screen Gems) but I have some faith since ND are involved with the development.
It was better if it was going to be developed by Sony's Columbia Pictures because it'll have a bigger priority. But If you checked Columbia Pictures history, they mainly produce high budget PG-13 films, while Screen Gems make mid-ranged budget R rated films (their highest produced film was underworld 4 with 70 million dollars) PS, it's developed by Ghost House (famous for their highly violent horror films) so it means we are going to expect a violent R-rated film just like the game. It's now up to the choice of actors and the director.
For the cast I agree with everyone about the choice of either Hugh Jackman or Josh Brolin as Joel, and Chloe Mortez as Ellie (unless they can convince Ellen Page to play her XD) Can I add another suggestion?? how about Hailee Stenfield as Ellie, she was the actress who played Mattie in the true grit remake.
How about this crazy idea, why not the game actors themselves?? maybe they can cast Troy Baker as Joe???? just dye his hair black and some make-up to make him look a little bit older and we'll get the ideal joel. As for Ashley Johanson, she's in her 30's so she's too old to play Ellie, but maybe they can age Ellie a few years older (we have seen many examples in other films where characters are age older/younger to match their actors actual age) nut aging Ellie will ruin the dynamic of Joel/Ellie.
Another suggestion is to write new characters, but that will be another "resident evil alice drama" among the fans of the original game.
I hope the best for this film because I want it to break the curse of "video game films suck" and to show the non-gamers how video games has matured and become more story-driven now.
Oh, and defintly, bring gustavo santaolalla to score the soundtrack again. Even if the movie sucked, at least we'll have great music.
