I'm not so sure about that, or the year 1984, I know they wanted Mario to have some sort of companion after the original Super Mario Bros., but serious design wasn't done until Super Mario Bros. 3 in the late '80s and even then they probably didn't have a 'final' Yoshi yet. In any case, Yoshi's first appearance was in Super Mario World in 1990 which I, and Nintendo probably as well, would consider the only date that matters. Maybe next year, at Yoshi's 25th.

Shigeru Miyamoto stated that Nintendo had wanted Mario to have a dinosaur companion ever since the first release Super Mario Bros.; however, it was not possible because of the limitations of the NES.[7] The inspiration for Yoshi can be traced back further, to the green dragon Tamagon in the 1984 video gameDevil World.

Stolen from Wikipedia

That actually means Yoshi, as he is, wasn't designed in 1984 though . Only an idea and the inspiration were there in 1985 during development of Super Mario Bros.. The sentence after that confirms it: "During the development of Super Mario Bros. 3, Miyamoto had a number of sketches around his desk, including an image of Mario riding a dinosaur." So in 1988, Yoshi was still in the conceptual stage.

But I don't really care about any of these specifics. What I actually do find interesting, is the sentence after that: "Takashi Tezuka, a Mario series developer, speculated that Miyamoto's love of horse riding as well as country and western influenced Yoshi's creation. Didn't know that! That's cool .

Ya design I guess wasnt the right word but im just saying if they really wanted to make this Year of Yoshi they could say the idea/concept of Yoshi had been around for 30 years.

But ya I imagine Miyamoto just sitting there thinking up ideas for Mario and goin, "hmm I really like horses.......GREEN DINOSAUR!!!!!"
