Really? you don't want USB3? that thing goes from 80-130MB/s with a normal HDD inside and all you have to do is to plug it in without having to open anything. With a Raid-0 Enclosure, you can easily manage 160MB+/s and those are not even SSD numbers.

Cost and aesthetics outweighs all of that for me. And I'm a complete novice at this stuff, but isn't SATA II > USB3?

The limitation is the HDD speed these days, not the interface speed, you'd need SSD to break certain barriers which would then cost a lot more, as far as external USB3 goes, they are fairly cheap these days.
