Microsoft’s release policy for its new game console, the Xbox One, has basically been one long middle finger to Asia. The console was released in North America and Europe last November, but it still has yet to launch in Asia.
A release for Japan is scheduled for later this year—not that anyone there is going to care—but is the Xbox One going to get its official Hong Kong launch first? Chinese gamers are wondering just that after Hong Kong’s official Xbox website got an update yesterday with a shiny new page promoting the Xbox One.
Whether this means anything is hard to say. As you can see, the advertisement on that site is still in English and doesn’t have subtitles, and the word “testing” appears in the URL. Moreover, if you scroll to the bottom and try to find retailers for pre-order, all you get is this error message.
Even so, though, it’s obvious that Microsoft Hong Kong is working on getting ready for launch at some point, and the fact that there’s a “Find Retailers” button at all would certainly suggest the company may be starting pre-orders soon. We’ve contacted Microsoft Hong Kong for comment and will update this post if we hear back.
