Obviously the city has grown, there are way more people now but war and instability for 35 years has done far too much damage. It should of been a developed country by now and Afghanistan likely would of been if it wasn't for ongoing war. Even if Kabul looks similar, stuff like women's rights and decent government certainly don't seem to exist anymore. A huge shame.

While the Taliban to me are like communist insurgents, they thrive off everyone's economic hardship. So if anything, just stop the war. Fund the building of better infrastructure and factories. Similar to Japan after ww2. 

 It's funny how much of a colonialist view you have there. There are plenty of countries that have been warless that haven't fully developed, often because a lot of areas within countries don't want to "develop".

 

Outside that.... You can't fund infrastructure and factories until you have security.  That should be basic common sense.

and the Afghan forces aren't capable of creating that needed security.

The way Afghanistan was progressing before war kicked off, it would of been like a western country. This would've been by choice. No one forced them to do that. All these wars changed things though and now the fundamentalists are holding it all back. I'm not saying they should be like us, but alot of stuff like that is acceptable here was happening there. 

'Development' not only means improving economy but the change in society to make it better for themselves. I don't know what is colonialist about that. But obviously, that is not Afghanistan anymore. 

The Afghanistan we see now has gone backwards and faces many problems that the west can't deal with for them. They need to want to improve their society away from the volatile and dangerous Taliban, which is what seems to cause alot of the ongoing issues. It's like an endless cycle now.
