Nintendo does titles like that for the purpose of brand recognition. Lots of other companies do it too. Not every title needs a subtitle. Take Final Fantasy for example. Does anyone really care that they just use a series of Roman numerals for the titles even though each title has nothing to do with any of the other ones? When they actually do make a sequel to one of the games, they just put the Roman numeral with a 2 after it. Nintendo does fine with a lot of their titles. Like Fire Emblem, Star Fox, Zelda, Kirby, Kid Icarus, etc. It's really just the Mario games that are anything like what the OP is accusing, but even they have some creativity. Take Mario Kart 8 for example. It's not just the number 8 after Mario Kart, it's a mobius strip, representing infinity.
